Team members

The people who participate in this community are the most important thing about the University of Alberta Physicists for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (UAP-JEDI). We are guided through the discussions of a non-hierarchical leadership team who follow the principles of shared leadership, as described further below. We are always welcoming of new people to join this leadership team, and welcome everyone to join in our community events.

Our principles for shared leadership

For University of Alberta Physicists for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (UAP-JEDI), the adoption of shared leadership as a practice within our organization will ensure that all voices are heard, including but not limited to undergraduate, graduate, postdoc, faculty, and staff members. Not only will shared leadership serve to structure our interactions within our group and the community, but it will also ensure that we are pursuing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion with every action. Our set of norms include:

Participation in regular community building and recruitment in order to set all members on the same level of authority.

Every member has the responsibility to recognize and encourage the skills, growth, and contributions of all members of the group so a sense of ownership is maintained without the designation of titles present in traditional hierarchies.

In group discussions we will engage with discomfort, ensuring that we “call in” rather than “call out” and promote learning rather than conflict.

Our team meetings will occur regularly, with meeting responsibilities being rotated through all members of the group.

Decisions will be made through consensus whenever possible; when it is not possible, those who are most influenced by the decision shall have the greatest voice.

One individual will act as discussion leader for each meeting, and is responsible for setting the agenda of that meeting.

One individual will take on the role of an all-voices champion, who will ensure that everyone is given equal time to share.

Meeting minutes will be collected in a shared Google document, with one person’s designated as notetaker, but with all participants encouraged to add information
