If you would like to play board games online do the following:

  1. Visit this link to Board Game Arena and create a free account

  2. Take a look at the board games that they have implemented on their platform and make note of which games you know or are interested in playing. All games, premium or non-premium are possible.

  3. Fill out this form so that we can add you to our group on the platform, and come up with a good list of games to try playing

2020-2021 UAP-JEDI Weekly Meeting Place

Join us, in this Winter 2021 semester, for a weekly chance to engage with your community in an informal and safe space -- as if over coffee and cookies in the lounge!

One week per month will be dedicated to a Reading group discussion, based on an article or news item shared ahead of time. Details to follow.

Drop-in: Mondays, 4 - 6 pm

Zoom invite link available in Slack or through your email.

All are students, staff, researchers, and faculty who are a part of the Physics community -- and their friends -- are welcome to attend.

We especially welcome people from equity-seeking groups in physics, including but not limited to women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority/racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2S+ communities.

This space will be maintained as a “safe/brave space”, where all attendees agree to 1) Share your perspectives with “I statements” (i.e., speak for yourself, not others) 2) Listen actively, 3) Consider W.A.I.T. = Why Am I Talking? 4) Assume good intent and be aware of your impact 5) Engage with discomfort 6) Respect differences and seek to learn from them 7) Agree that what is said here stays here; what is learned here leaves here

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon #2

The University of Alberta Physics for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the Graduate Physics Student Association are jointly hosting a Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon:

March 31st at 4:30pm (MST)

At our online event, attendees of all experience levels will learn how to edit Wikipedia articles through a hands-on editing session and contribute directly to improving the quality and diversity of information on the internet. Previous attendees will have the option of learning new skills (like adding photos!) or continuing their past edits, while new participants will be guided through the basics of Wikipedia editing.

Contribute directly to the quality and coverage of information on the internet for women and minority physicists in Canada! At our online event, attendees of all experience levels will learn how to edit Wikipedia articles through a learning session and hands-on editing.

Sign-up using this Google form and we will reach out soon with more details.

UAP-JEDI Picture a Scientist Discussion

The next monthly facilitated discussion will be

Mondays, 22 February 2021, 4 pm

UAP-JEDI will be hosting a post-screening conversation following the screening of Picture a Scientist by the Faculty of Science from February 17 to 20. J

Picture a Scientist is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist, and a geologist lead viewers on a journey into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field sites, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Register here for the film screening

Colloquium: Prof Shohini Ghose

Hunting for quantum butterflies

Friday, 30 October 2020

3:00 - 4:30 pm

Online connection details to come.

Chaos is all around us. From weather patterns to population dynamics to stock market volatility to the orbits of Jupiter’s moons, nonlinear and chaotic behaviour is commonly observable in our classical world. At the quantum level, the concept of chaos and its connection to quantum uncertainty is still ambiguous. This talk will discuss how chaos manifests itself in the quantum world, and how it impacts quantum phenomena such as entanglement and fidelity decay that play important roles in quantum information processing.

Professor Shohini Ghose is Professor of Physics & Computer Science at Wilfrid Laurier University, Director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science, President of the Canadian Association of Physicists, and TED Senior Fellow. Additionally, she is a 2017 Inductee of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

Join us for a discussion starting with some questions about Shohini's path into physics, and her work towards equity, diversity, and inclusion in physics (and STEM more broadly). Following this initial discussion, the floor will be open for questions and comments from participants, especially from students and postdocs.

Prof. Shohini Ghose is a Professor of Physics & Computer Science at Wilfred Laurier University in Guelph, ON. She is the current NSERC Chair for Women in Science & Engineering (CWSE) for Ontario and the Founding Director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science. Thursday, 03 October 2019, 3:30 pm

Avadh Bhatia Room (CCIS 4-218)

A first invitation:

"This meet-up event will be relatively informal, with some snacks and some conversation, and a chance to network with other members of the physics community. I will also take some time to share results of this informal survey. I am hoping that from these conversations come some fresh ideas, and with that we can start planning on-going events and find other ways to continue making our community an equitable, diverse, and inclusive one."
