University of Alberta Physicists

for Justice + Equity + Diversity + Inclusivity

In the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta, we explore the nature of our universe and marvel at its many wonders. As we engage in this journey, it is important to reflect on who "we" are and how our backgrounds and experiences influence our perspectives.

In committing to the principle that this pursuit of knowledge and understanding should be open to all, efforts must be made to ensure our physics community is equitable, just, inclusive, and diverse. To address historical and continuing biases, both implicit and explicit, we are engaging with people from equity-seeking groups to transform our department into a place that is embraced and strengthened by the participation of all.

This webpage is created to serve as a portal for information on events, meet-ups, and resources, especially for equity-seeking members of our community, including but not limited to women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority/racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2S+ communities.

Welcome Back to Campus!

With the return to in-person learning, we are eager to meet in person, but recognize that there will be different comfort-levels within the community and respect everyone's choices for engaging as they are able. There are a number of ways to get involved with UAP-JEDI:

  • Join our Fall events, including a Games Night and Colloqium (See below)

  • Join our Slack Channel, Facebook page, or Instagram to stay connected online

  • Consider joining the local APS IDEA team, to engage in workshops with other universities working towards EDI in their physics communities (contact Lindsay LeBlanc to sign up)

  • Join a leadership team meeting to help organize and help out with future activities, events, and initiatives (contact any team member to join the mailing list)

Fall 2021 Craft Night

Monday, 01 November 2021, 5:00pm -- ??

Undergraduate Physics Lounge, CCIS L2-003

UAP-JEDI’s first craft night - All are welcome, we look forward to seeing you there! Please

Come to meet the community, bring your own craft or join in on our dishcloth knitting workshop. No prior knitting experience required! We will provide instruction, needles, and yarn in a variety of fun colours.

As part of our journey towards addressing the long-standing, systemic barriers that have led to underrepresentation of marginalized groups in physics, we have been accepted into APS-IDEA (American Physical Society's Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance), a network of nearly 100 institutions, where we work together to apply evidence-based practices to increase EDI among our own students and scientists.
