Humanities 101 has had the incredible pleasure of working with many community organizations, especially in the 2023 Fall term, as we spent that term doing field trip-based learning. There are many organizations we have worked with, one of which was the Nina Haggerty, an arts center in the city, working with a collective of adult artists with developmental disabilities. It was an incredible opportunity to attend a workshop and be taught by the artists in the space. The Nina provides a welcoming and open environment for their artist collective to express and showcase their art, as well as teach other community members their skills. A very fun night of hands-on learning!
My biggest takeaway from CSL has definitely been the amazing chance to work with so many organizations within the city that I had never heard of. Through Humanities 101 and CSL 370, which is a spring class I took, I've gotten the incredible opportunity to work with many organizations within the city, such as Urban Farm, The SNAP Gallery and the Boyle Street Community Center. There have also been many opportunities to get more involved with the university, and discover how many different things our campus has to offer. Visits to the Digital Scholarship center, the Print Studies center, the Mineralogy & Petrology Museum, and so many more have really opened my eyes to how many things the university has to offer, and I owe it all to CSL!!
The experience I've gained over time by working with such a diverse group of people and organizations has been incredibly eye-opening and has helped me develop many skills and connections that will help me in my future endeavors. This ongoing experience has taught me the importance and meaning of giving back to my community. I have developed a new idea of what community service means to me and how I can apply my new perspectives to my future job and volunteer opportunities!
