Non-Profit Board Student Internship Program

Since 2006, NPBI has run as a joint project of the University of Alberta’s Community Service-Learning (CSL) Program and the Career Centre. NPBI provides students at the University of Alberta the opportunity to learn the variety of practices and skills involved in serving on the boards of community-based non-profit organizations. It also meets the non-credit requirement for the Certificate in Community Engagement and Service-Learning.

Students participated in three main activities during the internship: a series of workshops, a board placement, and a project to support board governance.

The board placement, under the guidance of a volunteer mentor from the host board, affords students the opportunity to attend and participate in board meetings and other activities. The workshops provide training and discussion of key aspects of non-profit boards (e.g. finance and budgeting, policy development).

NPBI students graduated on April 8, 2024 at a ceremony at City Hall.
