In Partnership with Nikon
July 22, 2026 | The University of Alabama in Huntsville
The University of Alabama in Huntsville Confocal Microscopy Workshop is a hands-on training program designed to introduce participants to the principles and applications of fluorescence and confocal imaging using the Nikon AX R confocal microscope system. By combining foundational lectures with guided small-group instrument sessions, the workshop will provide both theoretical background and practical experience in modern imaging techniques used in biological, biomedical, and materials research.
Participants will attend lectures covering a range of introductory topics and will receive hands-on instruction from Nikon specialists, who will provide direct guidance on both standard and advanced operation of the system. During the hands-on sessions, attendees will also have the opportunity to receive customized training with a Nikon representative tailored to their specific imaging interests and applications.
This workshop is open to participants from UAH, external academic institutions, and industry, including individuals interested in microscopy training or in learning more about the capabilities of the UAH Confocal Microscopy Facility (CMF).
The workshop is designed for:
Undergraduate and graduate students
Faculty
Research staff
Industry professionals who use, or are interested in using, microscopy in research or applied settings.
Beginner-friendly training will be available, and no prior experience with confocal microscopy is required for the introductory sessions.
Registration is free, but seats are limited.
This workshop will offer lecture-based instruction and guided, hands-on training on the Nikon AX R confocal system. Space is limited to support focused instruction and meaningful instrument time.
Training topics may include:
Basics of Optics and Microscope Physics
Fluorescence and Other Contrast Techniques
Introduction to Confocal Microscopy and the Nikon AX R
Demonstration of system capabilities with the UAH Confocal Microscopy Facility (CMF)
Nikon NIS-Elements analysis tools and quantitative analysis approaches
Customized training based on participant interests may include a variety of topics, such as
Z-stacks and 3D imaging
Live cell imaging
Spectral unmixing
Photoablation
Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) Imaging
Other specialized topics
