Team members: Jose Muniz, Vincent Pintozzi, Michael Richards, Can Ozcan
Date: 6/6/21
Version: 4
Mission Statement:
To provide the community of Winnetka, IL with a plan for a trail that is more beautiful, interactive, and accessible, by improving the health of the Green Bay trail both physically and aesthetically.
Project Deliverables: Final Report (website), Formal Presentation, and a Fully-Rendered Digital Model (outlining each phase of the design solution including their locations along the trail).
Constraints:
Estimated the costs of our project, in two parts
Initial build cost
10 year maintenance
Community approval:
Individuals who live near the trail
The village and park district’s divided ownership
Time
Project limited to the ten-week quarter
Resources
Access to the GBT due to distance
Access to modeling resources and software
Users and Stakeholders:
Stakeholders in the project include Friends of the GBT (FGBT), the Village Council of Winnetka, the Environmental and Forestry Commission of Winnetka, the Winnetka Park District and Authors of the 2040 Winnetka Comprehensive Plan.
Potential users of the renovated Winnetka portion of the Green Bay Trail include residents of Winnetka, and the North Shore and Chicagoland communities. Users include walkers, bike riders, dog owners/walkers, and nature enthusiasts.
User(s) Profile: Users of the GBT in Winnetka comprise a diverse population, wherein many genders, backgrounds, ethnicities, and passions are represented. As such, users make use of the trail for many different activities including walking, biking, jogging, fitness, dog walking, nature admiring, and more. The design solution must accommodate this diversity in order to be as inclusive as possible.
Illustrative User Scenario:
Currently, the Winnetka’s part of the trail is not so well kept. A user such as a biker, runner, or everyday user, will normally proceed along the trail and encounter several issues in regards to the path. These users will see puddles along the trail and also mini lakes caused by drainage issues on the side of the trail where the incline ends. The user will also notice the underpasses are not well kept and are generally not a good sight to see. Graffiti is often painted on the walls holding the support beams of the bridges overhead. The path itself is very uneven as puddles of water gather, making biking and using the trail hard to do if one is constantly dodging these puddles. When getting to the border between Winnetka and Glencoe, one can notice the drastic change in scenery as Glencoe’s side seems cleaner and without many puddles in sight such as with Winnetka’s side.
Project Requirements: In order to meet the requirements of the GBT users and stakeholders, the beautification and general restoration of the trail must be completed.
