Entry Event: Imperialism in china political cartoons
Introduction: Students will already be familiar with the idea of imperialism as the concept is introduced earlier in the class with European colonialism in Africa and India. If students are not familiar with the topic of imperialism, it would be a good idea to use one or more of the videos listed at the bottom of the page to help introduce the topic. Try using the videos in EDpuzzle as an active engagement activity.
Activity Description: Students will practice their inferencing skills by analyzing the political cartoons depicting imperialist ambitions in China.
Duration: This activity takes approximately 70-80 minutes.
Steps
- Break students into groups of 2-3.
- Provide students with a copy of "Imperialism in China Political Cartoons". This resource can be a worksheet or Google Doc if your classroom has access to laptops, chromebooks, etc.
- Allow students to work in their groups for 10-15 minutes.
- Review student answers in a class discussion format. Explain to students why imperialist powers wanted a presence in China (new markets to buy/sell goods).
- After reviewing the "Imperialism in China Political Cartoons", ask students to discuss with their partner/group the possible impact/consequences of one country taking over or imposing their will on another country. Students can record their thoughts on the back of the political cartoons document.
- Create a list (either on the board or with a projector) of student answers. Students should explain the reasoning for their responses.
- Have students watch "Asian Responses to Imperialism: Crash Course World History #213"
- Play "Imperialism in China" Kahoot! as an end of the class review.
