ELD 2 is a one period, yearlong course that continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with an increased focus on reading and writing. This course is intended to expand students’ abilities to access information presented in varying text types, through both individual and collaborative learning experiences. Reading, writing, and presenting opportunities reflect the level of English development, and the content extends the English language experiences of students. Students move from literal comprehension to interpretation of reading passages, and begin to identify idiomatic expressions in the English language. Course activities and assignments are based on the state-adopted ELA/ELD framework at the expanding level. The adopted curriculum for ELD 2 is Read 180, in which students rotate through time working in a Student Application, in a small group with the teacher, and reading appropriately-leveled books independently.
