ELD 1A is a one period, year-long course designed for new immigrants who have been enrolled in U.S. schools less than 12 months. This course is taken in tandem with ELD 1B. Course activities and assignments are based on the state-adopted ELA/ELD framework at the emerging level. The adopted curriculum for ELD 1A is Read 180, in which students rotate through time working in a Student Application, in a small group with the teacher, and reading appropriately-leveled books independently. Students are placed in the software according to test score data and learn phonics and/or comprehension skills based on their level of proficiency reading in English.
