Our Special Education courses are designed to serve a broad range of students. In general, Special Education courses are typically grouped by middle school and high school. There is no need to register for Special Education courses, enrollment is determined by the student's case manager and IEP team.
Foundations
Grades: 6-12 Length/Credits: Full Year (1.0 credit)
Foundations is designed to create a solid foundation of basic skills in Reading or Math for students who are significantly behind grade level. Students receive individualized instruction based on learning needs outlined in their Individualized Education Plan. Students receive credits toward English or Math when passing the course.
Strategies
Grades: 6-12 Length/Credits: Full Year (1.0 credit)
Strategies is designed to develop, strengthen, and improve strategies used in the academic areas of Reading and Math. The course is designed for students who are slightly behind in grade level instruction and need support to be successful in current grade level Math and English. The class helps build on skills and provide strategies to strengthen knowledge in either Reading or Math. Students receive elective credits if they pass this course.
Connections
Grades: 6-12 Length/Credits: Full Year (1.0 credit)
Connections courses are for students with IEP goals in the areas of organization, behavior, and social/emotional skills. The classes focus on the ability to articulate and respond to emotions, set and meet goals, and form relationships with adults and peers in the school. Students receive elective credits if they pass this course.
Academic Success
Grades: 6-12 Length/Credits: Full Year (1.0 credit)
Academic Success is designed to develop, strengthen, and improve skills for positive academic performance and achievement based on the learning needs of the student outlined in their Individualized Education Plan. Students receive elective credits if they pass this course.
Transitions
Grades: 11-12 Length/Credits: One Semester (0.5 credits)
Transitions is a class that focuses on skills that students will need to navigate the world after high school. Topics include career exploration, training or education to support their chosen career, skills for getting a job, skills for living on their own, and other post-secondary preparation. It is offered to juniors and seniors with an IEP.
