National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is the leader among educational organizations and societies that promotes recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Membership in National Honor Society is a privilege. The Honor Society member exhibits excellence in academics and leadership, honorable and admirable character, and demonstrates a commitment to service --all of which indicate that the member is willing to use personal talents and skills for the improvement of both self and society.

NHS is a program of NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals). The association stands behind the belief that the National Honor Society has made a positive impact in the lives of individual students and in the schools and communities of chapters everywhere. Finally, NASSP commends the advisers and principals in all of our member schools for their commitment to recognizing outstanding student achievement through their chapters of the National Honor Society.

To be considered a member in good standing, an NHS member must meet the service hour requirements each year they are a member, in addition to attendance requirements mentioned in the Bylaws. For seniors, these hours are due April 1st.

NHS Selection Procedures

The National Honor Society chapter of The Villages High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of the prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The national organization for NHS establishes the standards for selection, and our VHS standards have been revised to meet the needs of our local chapter. Students are selected to be members by a 5-member Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each fall.

At VHS, only students in 11th or 12th grade are eligible for membership. To meet the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or better or a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.0 or better. Beginning with entering juniors (class of 2028) in the fall of 2026 must meet a revised scholarship criterion. To meet the new criterion, a student must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.6 or better or a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.1 or better. Those students who meet the current or revised criterion, as applicable, are invited to complete a candidate information form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is also required. To be considered for membership, juniors are required to have a minimum of 40 hours of documented volunteer community service, and seniors are required to have a minimum of 60 documented hours.

The Faculty Council uses two forms of input to evaluate a candidate’s character. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, the input of members of the faculty and staff is solicited regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership. These forms and the Candidate Form are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.

Following the notification, a formal induction ceremony is held to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held during the school year and participation in chapter service projects. Membership in NHS

For many students, selection as a member of the National Honor Society is the pinnacle of their achievements in school. This honor, recognized throughout the nation, is both the public recognition of accomplishment and the private commitment to continued excellence on the part of the new member.

Selection to the National Honor Society is a privilege, however, not a right. Students do not apply for membership in the National Honor Society. Instead, they provide information to be used by the local selection committee to support their candidacy for membership. Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty Council on the condition of their having met the standards for selection. This is not an election, nor is membership automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specified level of academic performance. The National Honor Society is more than just an honor roll.

The National Honor Society is affiliated with The National Association of Secondary School Principals. If anyone receives correspondence from any other organization indicating that membership is being extended to a student, it is not related to our school's chapter of the National Honor Society. Invitations to apply for membership in our chapter occur only in the fall of every school year.
