Each school has their own deadlines and timeline when it comes to the application process. However, we have a general schedule that you can use as a guide. The application process in the UK starts earlier than what you may be used to in Japan, sometimes as early as three years before the admission date. Some schools offer rolling applications, whereas others have fixed deadlines, and still others are on a first-come-first serve basis. Therefore, it is essential you take note of the schools you are interested in and their individual timelines. 

Prestigious boarding schools such as Eton College, Harrow School, Sevenoaks, and Rugby School have a very competitive admissions process and are tough to enter. Because of their strict admission process, the applications often closes 3-3.5 years prior to the desired admission date. Additionally, there might only be a few entry points, rather than several options. 

One recommendation example for these schools

• Arrange a school visit when your child is in year 4 (grade 5)

• Apply to school when your child is in year 4/5 (grade 5/6)

• Entry to school for year 7 (grade 8)

Many schools accept rolling applications until all the available spots are filled rather than having a fixed deadline. The most popular entry points are year 7, year 9, and year 12. 

If you plan on visiting the school before applying, we encourage you to visit at least 1.5 year (19 months) before the desired admission year. 

Recommended timeline year 7 entry

• Arrange a visit when your child is in year 5 (grade 4)

• Apply to school before your child enters year 6 (grade 5)

• Entry to school for year 7 (grade 6), equivalent to Japanese Junior High School grade 1

Recommended timeline year 9 entry
Some schools have adopted an "Early Admission" system starting in 2024, in this case you must apply and take the assessment exams one year earlier. 

• Arrange a visit when your child is in year 7 (grade 6)

• Apply to school before your child enters year 8 (grade 7)

• Entry to school for year 9 (grade 8), equivalent to Japanese Junior High school grade 3

Recommended timeline year 12 entry "Sixth Form"

• Arrange a visit when your child is in year 10 (grade 9)

• Apply to school before your child enters year 11 (grade 10)

• Entry to school for year 12 (grade 11), equivalent to Japanese High School grade 1
