Arrive to class on time, everyday, prepared and ready to learn
Actively participate, even when it is uncomfortable or awkward
Communicate your thoughts, listen to others, and encourage reluctant peers to do the same
Write all required notes in your journal in an organized manner
Ask Questions!
Be Brave.
Do activities with the intent to learn not to just get them done
Check the website or Google Classroom page for updates, resources, and information
Complete self-reflections honestly and openly to help identify where further growth is needed
Stay Organized!
Give yourself some grace - it can be hard learning new things and you will get things wrong. That's Okay!! It is part of the process. You are growing.
Complete work on time and be prepared to share your thoughts on the date due.
Revise or retake assessments until you reach your personal goal or higher while you have the opportunity
Keep distractions at a minimum. Don't let a device, unhealthy habit, or social connection rob you of your chance to grow!
Most Importantly - use your voice to make sure your needs are met. You are important, you deserve this education, and you CAN do this.
There are more specific expectations for APES... please refer to that page as well.
Expectations
Expectations are put in place to help guide you as to what MY expectations are of you, what you should expect from your peers, and what you can expect from me. They help to provide consistent structure to our classroom that helps build our sense of safety in our classroom community. This is SUPER important! Because when students don't feel safe - it doesn't matter how much help I offer - their brain simply can't learn and grow because it is too busy trying to decide how to protect themselves.
Attendance/Tardies/Being Prepared
Learning starts at the bell - I prefer that you be in your seat when the bell rings to be counted on time. However, I won't send you for a pass unless you walk through the door after the bell rings.
If you are tardy, you will be granted entry into class with a pass, just hand it to me and take a seat.
Tardy students should not expect any passes out of class that period.
Come prepared with your journal, writing utensil, and charged Chromebook - every day.
Take care of your needs as a learner as they arise - however, only one person should be sharpening their pencil, throwing away trash, using the restroom, etc. at a time. Please be situationally aware and do not interrupt speakers to take care of these needs.
At the end of class, stay in your seat until the bell rings (everyone hates this - you'll survive - I promise!)
Electronic devices
phones/smart watches/ear buds are to be stowed and OFF during class
This is a building rule! Your device will be confiscated every time.
Do not take pictures of any person without their express permission when allowed to take pictures during labs.
Chromebooks should be focused on the activity assigned only. Assume school personnel can see your screen at any time.
Bathroom Passes
Bathroom use is okay on occasion.
However, if a student is using the bathroom often or is gone for longer than the expected time then bathroom privileges may be revoked - which is horrible for everyone but a natural consequence of those choices.
No Passes in the first ten or last ten minutes of class.
Materials
Keep your hands to yourself. If it's not your stuff or your body - leave it alone.
All graded work and assessments in progress are required to stay in the classroom (in your portfolio or binder).
Your journal stays with you! It is required every day.
Food and Drink
Water in a closed container is absolutely okay and encouraged.
No food or flavored drinks in lab classes
Labs...
Be here for labs. If you miss them, I may have a makeup lab or I may just have you copy the results only. You are still responsible for understanding what the results mean and the analysis!
Follow ALL safety rules, all the time.
Students that are unsafe during labs will be immediately sent to the office.
Group Discussions/Being part of our classroom community
Be respectful to everyone in our classroom community. It is never going to be okay to negatively call someone out for being different than you or to harass anyone in any way.
Use the guidelines and sentence starters. Everyone's thoughts and ideas are valuable!
Everyone will be wrong in this classroom from time to time! You may not laugh or comment on someone who is experiencing that panicky feeling of being wrong. As a classroom community, we will support you by giving you the tools to see that you are actually learning.
Academic Integrity
Copying or cheating on learning practice, labs (unless directed), and assessments violates public education's expectations of student conduct.
1st Offense - incomplete with scheduled supervised makeup. Home Informed.
2nd Offense and beyond - zero, opportunity lost to make up. Home Informed. Office Informed.
APES may have different expectations - please refer to the APES page.
That's A LOT! But - at least you know what to expect. If you feel I have missed something or you are opposed to an expectation because it interferes with your ability to fully invest yourself in the learning, please let me know. Remember, I can be reasoned with provided you give me adequate evidence. and it doesn't place me at odds with building expectations.
