My husband and I have three daughters but only two of them currently live at home. My oldest daughter is currently earning her PhD in Microbiology at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Our younger daughters are 17 and 15. They have many interests, so much of our afternoon is devoted to carting them around to viola lessons, Tacoma Youth Symphony, dance lessons, and volleyball.
As a family, we are big outdoor people! We live on a very small urban homestead where we grow a lot of our own food. We currently have chickens for eggs and because they are hilarious. We also have two dogs; a puppy Cattle dog mix and a four year old Pitbull mix and two cats that my daughter fostered from the time they were three days old. When we aren't maintaining our homestead (it's a big job!), we sail, sail, sail! During the sailing season, I can be found on Puget Sound at least once a week building my skills and confidence. But, truly, anything that gets me outside in nature is my total cup of tea!
We also are a family that loves music and art. Two of my children play string instruments (and the occasional piano), one is in choir, and I am currently learning the Uke! There is a lot of beauty out there in the world whether you are finding it in nature, experiencing someone's creation, or creating it yourself - I am grateful for not just the big things in life but the little things too.
Professional Journey
Education: Glendale Community College, Washington State University, University of Phoenix, Concordia University Portland
I started out with a Zoology Degree, minoring in Ecology and worked in the field through WSU identifying, collecting and preparing specimens to be shared with Moscow State University, yes, in Russia. I love being in the field but my priorities changed after having my oldest daughter. I went back to school and earned my teaching certificate and started teaching in 1999. My first job was at Frontier Junior High School for twelve years. Since then I have kind of been all over the place! I have taught and lead programs at Spanaway High School, Auburn High School, Tumwater Middle School, Tumwater Virtual Academy and I am now at Black Hills HS! Along the way, I have also earned my Master's Degree in STEM Program Development and have been certified to train Assessment for Learning and Implementation of the NGSS. I was lucky enough to be nominated for Disney Teacher of the Year and was awarded Auburn High School's Teacher of the Year. I get really excited about Science and witnessing student knowledge and confidence growth... anytime you mix enthusiasm with knowledge - things usually work out pretty okay!
