Pre-AP Art 2
Course Description
- This course allows students to continue their exploration of the many different aspects of visual art.
- Students will learn College Board expectations, review Art vocabulary, view the work of many different artists and art movements, and learn to appreciate Art as it enhances our world.
- Emphasis will be placed on Art Studio where students will create 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art works using various materials and methods.
- All students are expected to complete a mini-portfolio with a clear concentration.
- Students are encouraged to express themselves freely within the guidelines of each project.
- Students will hone skills necessary to successfully transition to AP Studio Art.
- As a Pre-AP class, homework will be required and may include research, writing, preparing presentations, drawing, working on projects, and any other activity deemed important to support our exploration of Art.
Plagiarism
- Students are expected to use artistic integrity throughout this course.
- Work based on published photographs or the work of other artists must move significantly beyond duplication, in both size and color, to illustrate an original idea.
- All artwork must be the original work of each individual student.
Classroom Expectations
Always bring your supplies, including sketchbook, pencil, pen, and eraser to class.
Respect others, yourself, the materials, and our studio.
Try your hardest to master every technique.
Classroom Procedures
- Students will enter quietly, take their assigned seat and store all personal items under the tables before the tardy bell is finished ringing. In accordance with Edison rules, no backpacks or food are allowed.
- If work is due, it will be collected immediately after the bell. Digitally submitted work must be uploaded onto the teacher computer at that time.
- Students are required to bring a pencil, pen, sketchbook, and all materials needed for their current project every day. Consequences for being unprepared for class will include detention and service to our classroom.
- We only have 50 minutes of studio time. Please don’t ask to go somewhere during this class if at all possible. A student will receive 4 passes each semester to take care of personal needs: locker, bathroom, etc.
Discipline
The disruptive behavior of one student deprives all others of their opportunity to learn by eliminating concentration and monopolizing the teacher’s time. Detentions and referrals will be used in accordance with TPS policy as necessary to give all students a fair opportunity to learn.
Attendance
- It is important to be in class every day to receive instruction and feedback. Access to school art materials and equipment is confined to the classroom and lack of access will greatly hinder a student’s ability to successfully complete assignments.
- Tardies are disruptive. Tardies interrupt the flow of instruction and discussion and limit an artist’s work time. Respect your classmates, teacher and art work --- be on time!
Grading
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59-0%
All people have different artistic abilities. Given our time constraints, I do not expect all students to master all techniques. However, all students are capable of making an A in Art. Assignments will be graded based on the following criteria:
- Effort – concentrating and giving your best, positive attitude, working everyday in class, and attendance
- Composition – effective use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
- Craftsmanship – overall quality of the work
- Creativity – showing a vision unique to each artist
Late Work
- Assignments are late if not turned in at the beginning of the class period in which they are due.
- Late assignments will receive an automatic deduction of 25% per day subtracted after deductions based on art grading criteria.
Make Up Work
- If absent, students are responsible for determining what work they missed. Assignments will be posted weekly on the Edison website.
- If absent, students will have the corresponding number of additional days to make up work.
Supplies
- Art supplies can be expensive.
- Students may choose to pursue an interest requiring art supplies not available through the district. It will be the responsibility of each student to provide these supplies for their individual work.
- School art supplies and portfolios may be checked out to students who sign a responsibility contract. Grade holds will be used to recover items or their value, just as they would for textbooks.
Communication
I love to hear from parents/guardians! Art is an exciting class and we have a lot to share. Please contact me whenever you have questions or concerns. I will be working my hardest during class time to help your students, so please e-mail at thomaju@tulsaschools.org or call during my planning period, 4th hour, 11:11-12:29pm.
I’m looking forward to a very creative year!
