AP Studio Art: Drawing, 2-D Design & 3-D Design
Course Description:
Through studio work, application of design concepts and informed decision making, students will assemble a body of artwork demonstrating a high level of knowledge of technique, process, and quality and should demonstrate evidence of growth. Students will expand their drawing/ 2-dimensional/ 3-dimensional design skills and advance their visual communication skills by exploring a variety of design processes, techniques and compositional and aesthetic concepts. Students should have previously been exposed to basic art skills including drawing, design and creative thinking. Students will develop mastery in composition, execution and concept development in preparing their portfolio for College Board submission.
Students will address three components in their portfolios:
Section 1: Quality
Section 2: Concentration
Section 3: Breadth.
In May, students will submit this body of work to the College Board for grading and subsequent possible college credit.
Students are expected to use artistic integrity throughout the course. Work based on published photographs or the work of other artists must move beyond duplication to illustrate an original idea. All artwork must be the original work of each individual student.
Expectations
Student Objectives
Attendance
It is important to be in class every day to receive instruction and feedback. Access to school art materials and equipment is confined to the classroom and lack of access will greatly hinder a student’s ability to successfully complete assignments.
Grading
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59-0%
All people have different artistic abilities. Given our time constraints, I do not expect all students to master all techniques. Assignments will be graded based on the following criteria:
1. Effort – concentrating and giving your best, positive attitude and attendance
2. Composition – effective use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
3. Craftsmanship – overall quality of the work
4. Creativity – showing a vision unique to each artist
In addition, all students will be expected to complete and submit a portfolio with a clear concentration.
Supplies
In addition to their basic supplies, students may end up pursuing an interest requiring other art supplies not available through the district. It will be the responsibility of each student to provide these for their individual work.
Course Outline
Students will primarily be preparing work on the Breadth section of the portfolio during
the first semester. A variety of concepts and approaches will be used to demonstrate abilities and versatility with techniques, problem solving and ideation.
During the second semester, students will transition into more open-ended and exploratory work for the Concentration section of the portfolio, developing a body of work that is a planned investigation of an idea of interest to them.
