Graduation Requirement: Physical Education
This Physical Education will provide students with knowledge, experience, and an opportunity to develop skills in more than one of the following sports or activities: team sports, individual/dual sports, recreational sports, and fitness/conditioning activities. Through class participation, discussion, and presentations, students will gain valuable knowledge in areas such as strength, cardiovascular fitness, nutrition and flexibility. Students will participate in a variety of activities that will help them discover which activities are suitable for their lifestyle. Students will develop a fitness plan that will demonstrate their ability to maintain an active lifestyle throughout and beyond high school. Activities will include aerobics, introduction to sports, and various individual activities.

A Team Sports course provides students the knowledge, experience, and opportunity to develop skills in more than one team sport such as basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, soccer, softball, and ultimate Frisbee. Students will learn the rules, skills, and strategy for each sport as well as information about proper physical training such as techniques for improving flexibility, muscle strength, and aerobic capacity. Students will collaborate in group and team setting.

Weight Training will help students develop knowledge and skills with free weights and universal stations while emphasizing safety and proper body positioning. The weight training class will emphasize the importance of physical activity in daily life and allow students to learn the value of weight training for strength, size, and endurance. Students will engage in developing a fitness plan that incorporates all areas of physical fitness. They will participate in daily workouts to improve their overall muscular strength and endurance.
Prerequisite(s): Beginning Weight Training or Instructor permission.

Students will design their individual weight training programs to develop speed & agility, and manipulate body composition. Student’s individual lifting plans will include nutritional strategies that are required to maintain this advanced workout. This class is designed for athletes and other students who are motivated to make physical gains.

A program that prepares individuals for employment in health and fitness clubs, wellness centers, public and private recreation facilities, hospitals and corporate fitness programs where they will perform a variety of instructional and administrative duties. Includes instruction in human anatomy and physiology, fitness techniques, exercise science, personal training, nutrition, and customer service.

In this course, students will develop skills useful or necessary in an aquatic environment. This class will cover basic swimming techniques to more complex techniques (crawl stroke, breast stroke, back stroke, etc.). This course is designed for any student regardless of their swimming experience. This class is gender specific.

Prerequisite(s): 15 years of age by last day of the course, comfort swimming laps, FHS Swimming Course or special permission from Instructor.

In this course you will learn the skills to become a lifeguard. Students will learn CPR, First Aid, how to use an AED, Lifeguarding Skills, Lifeguard Rescues, How to save and protect lives. Course participants will have the opportunity to take the final written exam and practical exam to obtain their American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

This Health Education course provides information to promote positive, individual health practices in the health triangle. Areas of study include health awareness, methods for achieving positive mental health and stress management, mental health conditions, nutrition and nutrients, substance use prevention and consequences of abuse, sexuality education includes instruction regarding the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive systems, abstinence, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS, and sexual health care.
