Advisory (Grades 9-12; 0.25 credit)

Graduation Requirement: Elective


Advisory is grade level required class that meets twice a week. Students earn elective credit in advisory class.

The goals of advisory are to create meaningful connections between students and their teacher and to prepare all students for their futures, including:

  • Teaching academic, personal and social skills for success

  • Teaching information about college and career options and pathways

  • Planning for high school classes

  • Planning for college and career

  • Creating a high school and beyond plan: a state graduation requirement

AVID (Grades 9-12; 1 credit)

Prerequisite(s): Interview with AVID Site Team, Signed contract, maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.

Graduation Requirement: Elective


AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination. Course designed to prepare students to enter four-year colleges or universities. Course emphasizes writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading strategies, tutoring/study groups, preparation for college entrance and placement exams, study skills and test taking strategies, note taking and research. Students are expected to keep an organized binder, complete Cornell Notes in academic classes, participate in tutorials, maintain positive, communicative relationships with teachers, and set academic goals and work to achieve them.

Leadership (Grades 9-12; 1 credit)

Graduation Requirement: Elective


This course is designed to strengthen students’ personal and group leadership skills. Students will organize, plan and manage assemblies, dances and service learning projects. The course will cover such topics as public speaking, effective communication, human relations, parliamentary law and procedures, organization and management, group dynamics and ASB financial management.

AP Psychology (Grades 9-12; 1 credit)

Graduation Requirement: Elective


Following the College Board’s suggested curriculum designed to parallel a college-level psychology course, the AP Psychology course introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals, expose students to each major subfield within psychology, and enable students to examine the methods that psychologists use in their science and practice. Students are expected to take the AP exam in May.

Library TA (Grades 11-12; 0.5 credit)

Prerequisite(s)(s): Permission of Librarian

Graduation Requirement: Elective


Library/AVC Assistant courses provide students with the opportunity to work in the library or in media, audiovisual and technology centers. Duties may include collecting, distributing, and categorizing materials; operating audiovisual equipment; assisting with technology use; assisting students and teachers; and performing clerical duties. Students typically gain experience in library science and/or media, audiovisual and technology.

Main Office TA (Grades 11-12; 0.5 credit)

Graduation Requirement: Elective


The Office Assistant course provides students with the opportunity to work in campus offices, developing skills related to clerical office work. Duties may include typing, filing, record-keeping, receiving visitors, answering the telephone, and duplicating, among others. These courses emphasize appropriate work attitudes, human relations, and proper office procedures.

Classroom TA (Grades 11-12; 0.5 credit)

Graduation Requirement: Elective


Classroom teacher’s assistance (TA) course offer students the opportunity to assist instructors in preparing, organizing, or delivering course curricula or to assist other staff members in fulfilling their duties. Students may provide tutorial or instructional assistance to other students.

Counseling Office TA (Grades 11-12; 0.5 credit)

Graduation Requirement: Elective


Counseling/Guidance teacher assistance course provides students with the opportunity to work in the campus guidance office. Duties may include typing, filing, record-keeping, assisting students, answering the telephone, and duplicating, among others. Students may also act as guides to new students. These courses emphasize appropriate work attitudes, human relations, and proper office procedures.
