This course focuses instruction on basic listening, speaking, reading and writing strategies to begin communicating in English. The course is a block course (2 periods) which will introduce vocabulary (BICS and CALP) and basic skills to develop a foundation for content area reading and writing in English.

The course introduces social and academic vocabulary (BICS and CALP), intermediate reading skills and learning strategies to develop a foundational level of text comprehension.

English/Language Arts I courses build upon students’ prior knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, word usage, and the mechanics of writing and include the four aspects of language use: reading, writing, speaking, and listening from English Language Development (ELL) and Common Core State Standards. This course is a block course (2 periods) which will focus on using an effective writing process and strategies, and writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. This course will introduce and define various genres of literature with writing in response to reading. We will focus on Creative Writing and Academic Writing.

The course will utilize specialized vocabulary (CALP), complex reading skills, and a variety of learning strategies to develop the topics to meet the Washington State History requirement.

This course includes cultural interactions, colonization, resistance, and world political systems and current events. Students apply research and computer technology skills to complete a CBA research project.

Human Geography focuses on content that is presented thematically rather than regionally and is organized around the discipline’s main subfields: economic geography, cultural geography, political geography, and urban geography. The approach is spatial and problem oriented. Case studies will be used throughout the year and will be drawn from all world regions, with an emphasis on understanding the world in which we live today. Historical information serves to enrich analysis of the impacts of phenomena such as globalization, colonialism, and human-environment relationships on places, regions, cultural landscapes, and patterns of interaction. English language learners will be provided opportunities to develop academic language in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Graduation Requirement: US History
The U.S. History course will provide students with an overview of the history of the United States, examining time periods from discovery or colonialism through World War II or after. This course will include a historical overview of political, military, scientific, and social developments. Course content may include a history of the North American peoples before European settlement. The class is designed to help new English speakers work on their reading, writing and comprehension skills through the content area. Students will participate in a final, in-depth research project and presentation.

Graduation Requirement: Civics/Economics
This Civics course surveys the general structure and functions of American systems of government, the roles and responsibilities of citizens to participate in the political process, and the relationship of the individual to the law and legal system in order for ELL students to gain an understanding of the foundations of citizenship in the US. The students will also study the impact world events have on the United States, Washington State, and each of us as individuals.

Topics are introduced through themes such as life and structures and functions of organisms, life processes, and ecosystems. The course will utilize specialized vocabulary (CALP), reading skills, and a variety of learning strategies to develop the topics necessary to be prepared for general education science courses.
Graduation Requirement: Lab Science
Physics is the study of the physical world to learn how the physical world behaves. In particular, physics is the study of matter and its movement through space and time as well as related concepts such as force and energy. This is an inquiry and experience based course that introduces the topic. This is a group work and experience based course that introduces the topic through projects, group work, and problem solving. English language learners will be provided opportunities to develop academic language in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Life Science Foundations is an introductory course in life sciences. The course provides a basic understanding of living things. Topics covered will include cell biology, biochemistry, current biological issues, genetics, reproduction, evolution, taxonomy and ecology.
