Your child will be sent home each night with a take-home binder and a home connection sheet. ANYTHING required of your child to do at home will have been taught and discussed in class.
It is not my intention to have your child doing schoolwork for hours and if you find that your child is spending more than 30 minutes each night on his or her homework, please reach out to me.
Students will be required to read at home for a total of 45 minutes a week.
The breakdown of this is completely up to what works in your house. If it is easiest to read 45 minutes all in one night - so be it! If it works better to read 9 minutes each night on the weekdays only - I call that a success! Anything goes, as long as your child is logging some reading!
Students will be required to take a comprehension test each Thursday over a story we read in our reading textbook.
The test is required - the "homework" is greatly encouraged. Each Wednesday night, their orange HMH Into Reading textbook will come home with them. I encourage you to read that week's reading story together, ask them some questions, and discuss the power words - that way they will be prepared for the test the following day. And when you've finished reading the story, don't forget to put the textbook back into your child's backpack - they'll need it on Thursday!
Students will be required to complete two math homework pages a week.
These homework pages will come straight from the workbook that is paired to the textbook, and you can expect to see these pages on Tuesday and Thursday. Students should be very familiar with the layout and content of each worksheet, as we complete an almost identical one in class together every Tuesday and Thursday. Only the numbers are different! It is important that the students get a bit of extra practice on the math material so they can be prepared for their math tests each Friday. And - this math builds on itself! Your kiddos will be using these math concepts forever!
Students will be required to practice their UFLI words via a worksheet each week.
There will be a UFLI worksheet sent home with your child on Monday and is due back to class by Friday. That means your child has a whole week to complete the assignment! I recommend doing bits of it each night, but similar to our 45 minutes of reading each week, the breakdown for completing the worksheet is up to what works in your house. The phonics/spelling hybrid test will be on Friday, so practicing those phonics concepts in any capacity a few times a night will be beneficial for your child's success at the end of the week.
