Our goal in The Backyard is to create and maintain a loving, safe, and compassionate classroom community.
Throughout the year, we learn and build up the skills we need to succeed in the classroom and in other areas of our lives. One way we do this is by learning and practicing a "Lifeline" each week. We reference them frequently, and emphasize their importance daily.
They're even hanging up in our classroom!
At the beginning of the year, we "sign" an "agreement" with each other. We come up with some core rules and expectations to follow throughout the year, write them on a large piece of yellow butcher paper, and sign our names on thin strips of yellow construction paper.
All of these yellow papers then get mounted above the whiteboard in the front of the room, where we can all see it, and be reminded of the agreement we made.
We even recite these rules every morning so they're always fresh in our minds.
