Class Information

ABC’s of 2nd Grade

Mrs. Nicole Sondgerath

Absences- If an absence is pre-planned, please let me know.  I can put together a packet of work that will be missed so the student does not fall too far behind. If your child is absent, they will have a make-up day for each day missed to submit their work.

Art- Lindsey Berkesch is our art teacher.  Her grading and expectations are listed on her class website.  Our class goes to art on Fridays.

Assignments- Homework will be assigned most days with the exception of Friday.  Math homework will be assigned and the page is ripped out at home. It is your choice for your child to keep this math homework book at home or in their backpack.  This will allow you to review the skill with your child and make corrections as needed.  I do not grade math homework assignments.  However, I do check them for understanding and completion. Reading at night is a great way to improve your child’s skills.

Attendance- Attend each day and arrive on time.  The classroom door will open at 8:50 and class will begin at 9:00.

Birthdays- Your child is welcome to share a treat with the class on, or near, their birthday. Plan to purchase roughly 25 treats. If your child has a summer birthday, we can celebrate their ½ birthday. Also, please do not send invitations to your child’s party to school if the entire class is not invited.  This makes an uncomfortable situation for the students and I  if someone is left out.

Book Orders- I will send home Scholastic book order forms as I receive them.  Please use our classroom activation code WTHTW when placing your order online or send your book request and money to school.  These are quality books at very reasonable prices!  However, you are never under any obligation to make a purchase.

Character Education- I feel that this is very important to each child, especially at this age.  We will spend time each week on life skills such as: citizenship, friendship, honesty, respect, and responsibility.  Please try to continue discussing these traits with your child at home.

Comfort in Class- During the warmer months, the air conditioning may be quite cool. A sweatshirt or sweater may make your child more comfortable. No outdoor jackets or hats may be worn in class.

You will always be able to make contact with me at nrsondgerath@tsc.k12.in.us I welcome all questions, and I’m eager to help your child have their most successful year of learning.

Emergencies- All doors of Wyandotte are locked at all times.  If there is a lockdown or lock out, you will not be allowed in or out of the building.  We will be in close contact with local authorities to ensure that safety is a priority.

Field Trips- We will go on a few field trips this year.  Parents/Guardians MUST have a criminal background check on file with the office prior to going on the trip. These need to be updated EVERY YEAR!

Graded Homework- Students will bring home graded homework throughout the week in the Homework/Mail folder. PLEASE CHECK THIS WEEKLY AND EITHER KEEP OR THROW AWAY GRADED WORK SO THE FOLDER IS NOT FULL!

Grading Policy- This is posted on our class webpage.

Handbook- Please check out the school handbook online, or in the office.  Everything you need to know regarding school routines and procedures can be found there.

Home Connect - Please look at this page sent home weekly so you are aware of homework assignments that need to be completed.

Homework Policy- This is posted on our class webpage.

Information- School information is sent home by mass emails, school newsletters, TSC2GO app or by fliers.  Fliers will be handed out and should come home in your child’s Homework/Mail folder. PLEASE CHECK CLASS DOJO FREQUENTLY!

Lunch- Our lunch is at 11:10 followed by recess.  Your child may choose daily from hot or cold lunch.  Make sure you check your child’s lunch account balance often. If an account should become negative, a letter will be sent home until the account is updated/fixed.

Money- When money is sent to school, please place it in an envelope or Ziploc bag, seal it, and label it with your child’s name, amount enclosed, and what it is for.

Monitoring Grades- You are able to view your student’s grades via the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Use the same log-in information that you used to register for school this year. If you believe there has been a mistake or you are concerned about a grade, contact me.

Music- Ms. Baldwin is our music teacher.  Her grading and expectations are listed on her class website.  We visit her on Wednesdays.

Neatness- Students will be expected to do their personal best on all schoolwork.  Thoroughness and attention to detail are important in any work done at school or on the job, and I will encourage your child to take pride in their work.

Parent Conferences- Conferences will be held in the fall and in the spring.  Specific weeks, and your meeting time, will be discussed closer to each date.

P.E.- Our P.E. teacher is Mrs. Rush.  Her grading and expectations are listed on her class website.  We go to P.E. on Thursdays.  Make sure your child wears tennis shoes on Thursday.  Coming prepared in proper clothing attire is part of their grade!

Phones- If your child brings a cell phone to school, it needs to be turned off during the school day.

P.T.O.- I encourage you to join our PTO.  They do many wonderful things for our school!  Check out the school calendar for PTO meeting dates and times.

Recess- Please dress according to the weather for that time of year.  It also helps to mark your child’s name on all outerwear.  Hats, gloves, backpacks, sweatshirts, and coats are lost throughout the year and never claimed.  There is a Lost & Found table near the cafeteria.  Please check it for lost items.  When a child wears boots during cold or rainy weather, a pair of shoes should be brought to change into.  Sneakers must be worn on P.E. days.

Snacks-  Our lunch time is 11:10 which makes a long time between lunch and dinner. Students are welcome to bring a small healthy snack each day. Dry snacks such as cereal, granola bars, vegetables, crackers, or fruit that is not messy are fine.  To avoid attracting pests, no food will be kept in the room overnight. Students will also be asked not to trade or share snacks with classmates.

Snow delays/cancellations-  Please check out the local news and local radio stations for updates on school delays and cancellations.  You can also check the TSC webpage or TSC2Go App.  It will be updated with delay/cancellation information as soon as it’s available.

Suggestion- Some children struggle with managing their time for school, sports, play, television, and video games. Help your child limit the use of television and video games. If these items are in the child's bedroom, you may want to remove them to a different location. It will be a way to ensure that time is used most effectively for work, sleep, and leisure.

Supplies- Second Grade supply lists were already provided. If you have questions, let me know!
