The Pinto Diner: Second Grade High Ability Classroom
Math is part of our everyday world. That connection with each unit of study is essential. When students know where math fits into their lives, it makes more sense. Each unit of study is designed to shed light on math in the real world. We use the TSC-adopted math program, Ready Math. This solid math program is built on a foundation of deeply understanding and applying each concept to the real world. In addition, they also have a math packet for practice. Worksheets are never my go-to, but skills must be practiced in math. Those packets are a practice ground. I always have manipulatives on hand for each lesson. There is also a math practice book for extra exposure to each skill. The kids love doing it. Again, students need to practice the skills they are learning. A solid math foundation allows each child to take the next step in applying their learning skills.
Gift Bag Math is a fun way to apply all the math we are learning to ordinary objects in their world. Yes, I put the objects in a white gift bag, and we write all of the math they brainstorm on the bag. The goal is to find all the math around us, like a colored pencil box, a string of lights, and even a candy box from the movies. We have a tub full of objects.
If your child excels at the second-grade high-ability math curriculum, my goal is to enrich each unit of study. This will allow me to differentiate their specific needs. Adding Math to Know and game/activity extensions is all part of this differentiation.
