The TSC School Corporation adopted a new Reading Series last year, which is the i-Ready Reading Series. The teacher and student materials arrived for this series right before school started, so our team has been actively making decisions on our instruction.
The students also take the iReady Diagnostic Test for Reading and Math at the Beginning, Middle, and End of the school year in order to track their growth in both areas and determine if interventions are needed. When students complete their Reading Assignments each Day, they use their Chromebooks to access Reading Lessons on the iReady Program to work ontheir Personal Areas of Need. After working for about 20 minutes on these lessons, they work on reading and taking tests for their AR Goal.
The students will bring home a weekly Reading Assignment Sheet on Friday of each week in their RED FOLDER. It will list the daily Reading Homework, which is to read books for their AR Reading Goal each night for 20 - 30 minutes. The assignment sheet will also have a list of the spelling words for the week, the vocabulary words that we are working on, and the Super Words (HighFrequency Words)we have for our weekly lesson. The students will have a test each week on the Spelling Words, Vocabulary Words, and the Super Words.
I will also be giving all the students the "STAR TEST" to determine their Reading Levels very soon. The Star Test will enable me to set their AR Goal for the first nine weeks grading period. The student will have a daily homework assignment to read an AR Book 20 - 30 minutes each day (this can be a family bedtime activity). It can be a book they read individually, that you read together, or that you read to them. They will just need to take an AR Comprehension Test on it at school or at home(with no parent help). I will be sending LOTS of information about this home, when we get started. So for right now you can help them by listening to them read, reading with them, or reading to them with any books you want. Great readers develop from seeing and hearing other people read(Reading Role Models). So just by spending 20 - 30 minutes of your time being a Reading Role Model for your child, makes a HUGE difference in what kind of reader they will become!😊
