Reading instruction will focus on building students' knowledge through the reading of whole fiction texts that are paired with nonfiction texts. Research shows that readers with better fluency, background knowledge, and vocabularies better comprehend what they read. Our focus will be on developing these areas within the texts we read. In addition, we participate in the WordMasters Challenge and learn Greek and Latin roots.
Writing and grammar will be integrated into our Reading, Science, and Social Studies content. Students will participate in formative, developmental, and summative writing exercises with opportunities for short bursts of writing and feedback daily.
Our math units will be centered on rich math tasks and projects. Conceptual understanding is our main goal in mathematics. Students will practice talking and writing about their math thinking. Automatizing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts is a necessity. We will use Fluency by Heart and Xtra Math to practice facts. We will also be utilizing iReady and IXL for independent practice.
We will study several themes throughout the year to learn social studies and science topics and skills. This year our themes will be ancestry, the Lafayette community, government, social justice, cultures, forces and motion, and weather.
Each student has a Chromebook to use in class. We learn digital citizenship, typing, and other computer skills. We use Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Classroom. Students can access their Google Drive from home through the TSC website.
