Reading

Our reading curriculum includes foundational skills of sound patterns and fluency, comprehension skills in literature and nonfiction, and vocabulary. We focus on specific skills as we read picture books as a class, work with partners, and participate in book clubs. We work with various vocabulary lists and will be working on Greek and Latin roots and stems.

Writing

Writing and Language is integrated together. Students will be learning a variety of grammar skills. During writing time, we will engage in genre and process studies and explore different types of writing including informative, narrative, persuasive, and poetry.

Math

Our math units will be centered on rich math tasks and projects. Conceptual understanding is our main goal in mathematics. Students will practice talking and writing about their math thinking. Automatizing addition and multiplication facts is a necessity. We will use an app called Reflex to practice facts. We will also be utilizing Khan Academy, iReady, and IXL for independent practice.

Theme

We will study several themes throughout the year to learn social studies and science topics and skills. This year our themes will be plants, biomes, economy, and geology.

Technology

Each student has a Chromebook to use in class. We learn digital citizenship, typing, and other computer skills. We use Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Classroom. Students can access their Google Drive from home through the TSC website.
