The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test is designed to assess student reading levels throughout the course of their education. Aligned with state and national reading standards (Common Core Standards), these exams were created to determine overall reading ability, specifically in the areas of decoding, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.
The two‑part assessment is administered to all 9th‑grade students once in September and again in May.
Vocabulary: Assesses a student’s word knowledge and decoding skills by having them choose words or phrases that best match the meaning of a given word.
Comprehension: Measures silent reading comprehension by testing a student's ability to read passages and answer recall or inferential questions about the text.
