National English Honor Society

National English Honor Society is a unique opportunity to engage high school students and teachers from around the world with opportunities to immerse themselves in experiences that promote literacy and serve society, while also honoring exceptional and diverse achievements in the English language arts and related subjects. Our NEHS Chapter, The Wild Things, operates in ways that benefit our THS population and community while also aligning with the values of NEHS so that our members can grow as scholars, leaders, collaborators, and engaged citizens.

In addition to our community-based activities and experiences, several members received honors and recognition for their work. Check out our 24-25 year in review to see our Wild Things’ accomplishments.

📌 What we do and what we expect of our members:

First and foremost, we are an HONOR society whose goal is community literacy outreach. There are NEHS sponsored activities and service projects happening nearly every single week at THS. Our members are active and involved. If you are granted membership, we will expect the same from you.
We do offer two school-wide book chats, but we are NOT a book club. Our members actively engage with our local community through our NEHS-sponsored events including tutoring, social media handles, maintaining our Little Free Library, making bulletin boards, and submitting original writing to both local and national competitions.
We offer academic assistance both during and after school. Our members are strong students of English who are able and willing to tutor others in all levels of English, ACP to AP. English teachers also ask for members to push in to their classrooms and offer 1:1 help with writing.

NEHS offers weekly Wednesday after-school tutoring for all THS students.

As you consider applying to the THS Wild Things Chapter of the National English Honor Society, here are some things to keep in mind:

📌The criteria for acceptance into NEHS is based on more than grades and GPA. Meeting the required grade threshold allows you to apply for entrance; it does not guarantee admittance. Applicants are evaluated holistically using the following information:

Students must have a CLEAN academic and behavioral record. Under no circumstances will we admit a student who has been disciplined for cheating, plagiarism, bullying, or any other behavior that is unbecoming of an honor society student. Individual members represent our society as a whole.
Teacher recommendations are confidential and held in very high regard. Do you go above and beyond expectations? Are you friendly and helpful to others? Are you respectful to classmates and instructors? Do you give every task 100% effort? Are you an active member in class discussions? Do you make consistent positive contributions to the classroom? Have your teachers asked if they can use your work as an exemplar model? Those are the students we are looking for.
We will assess an on-demand writing sample. The Wild Things Chapter prides itself on its community literacy outreach. This means that our members are regularly: emailing school staff and community members, creating flyers and other announcements, and posting blurbs and captions on our social media accounts. We are looking for students whose voice shines through in well-developed and fluid writing.

Each year the National English Honor Society chooses two books as Common Readers that all of their chapters utilize in a variety of ways, including scholarship opportunities. For the 2025-2026 school year, these books are Angie Cruz’s How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water (2022) and Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library (2020).

Angie Cruz’s How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water is the book for the Fall Cycle, and our discussion will be in late September.
Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library is the book for the Winter Cycle with our discussion planned for early December.

The National Chapter of NEHS suggests this site for discounted used copies: Better World Books. You can also support small businesses such as The Book Cabin of Lake George or Trumbull’s Next Chapter Books.
