TIME CHANGE for 9/19 Football at Neptune! New reporting and performance times!
At the high school level, Band class is a co-curricular elective. The class concentrates on aspects of marching band in September, October, and May, and concert band for the remainder of the school year. Band class is open to all students who either play a traditional band instrument, or are willing to work hard (often over the summer) to learn enough for eligibility. We meet daily, during period 8. The directors encourage all students to join the band class for four years, to get the most fun out of the performing art!
What does it mean to say a class is co-curricular? In short, this means there are mandatory, graded activities that take place outside of the normal school day, and often outside of the normal classroom setting. Students in band class must be participating members of the pep band and parade band, in addition to concert band. Practices and performances for these bands are graded, and must be made up via an alternate assignment if there is an excused absence.
Our grading system has a "Performances" category. Band class students are required to attend August mini-camp to learn or review all the basics, all football games and pep rallies as part of the pep band, all parade practices and parades as part of the parade band, and concert band dress rehearsals and concerts. Additionally, our "Assessment" grades include memorization testing on the Star-Spangled Banner, school song (Old Indian Tom), and parade music, as well as non-memorization testing on concert band music.
Because it is an elective course, Band class must fit in to your daily schedule. You and/or your parents/guardians must talk to your current guidance counselor about band class.
Absolutely! Students who cannot take Band as a class may still participate in the extra-curricular Marching Indian Band. They will be members of the field show/competition unit, as well as the parade band. These students will have intensive summer rehearsals, to prepare before band class begins in September. However, most of the concert band preparation occurs daily in class. Therefore, non-class musicians wishing to participate in concert band must ask the directors, and final decision is solely the directors' discretion.
We welcome students of the academies, as well as afternoon vocational students, to join our award-winning Marching Indian Band on the extra-curricular level. Most academy students can only fit 1-2 years of Band class in to their schedules, due to the demand of academy electives. Unfortunately, afternoon vocational students currently may not take Band class because we only meet in the final period of the day.
