Informal Definition:
A simile is a comparison, between two different things/people/etc. often using “like” or “as,” to portray them through their similarity rather than how they seem standing alone, for example “Life is like a roller coaster” (Alex Schachter). Life isn’t actually a physical roller coaster, but it is comparing the feeling of life by using the experience of going on a rollercoaster.
Etymology:
“Classical Latin simile comparison, parallel case, image, likeness, resemblance, use as noun of neuter of similis like”
