This website was assembled in September 2022 by the students enrolled in AP English Language and Composition at Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, Florida. On this site, you will find a select group of literary and rhetorical devices that appear in texts of various types. In some cases, more rarely used devices were included because they are especially memorable or impactful when they are deployed.
One distinctive feature of this website is its emphasis on analysis. Often, students become adept at identifying a device, but they have difficulty in taking the further step of unpacking its purpose and effects. As a result, after identifying and defining their terms, the writers who created this site go on to explain why authors might use these devices and how readers might effectively analyze the devices when they appear. Entries end with an example of the device as it is used in a piece of nonfiction prose, and these examples include an accompanying analysis of the passage in which the device is used.
