Day 1:

MISUSING SCRIPTURE CAN CAUSE REAL HARM.

Key Scripture:
His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.2 Peter 3:16 (NIV)

Teaching:

Peter is speaking about Paul’s letters—parts of the Bible that hold deep truth. But he gives a warning: some people were twisting those writings and, in doing so, walking a path that led them away from life and toward destruction.

That warning still applies today.

When a Bible verse is lifted out of its place and turned into a slogan, it can do damage. Instead of bringing healing, it can be used to push pressure, fear, pride, or control. It might sound biblical, but it lacks the heart and fullness of what God really said.

Reading the Bible isn’t about collecting phrases. It’s about learning to hear God’s voice clearly and truthfully. That takes patience, prayer, and a heart that’s willing to be shaped—even challenged.

Even Jesus was once confronted with twisted Scripture. In Matthew 4:6, Satan quoted a Psalm in an attempt to manipulate Him. Yes, the devil knows verses too. But Jesus responded with the full truth, staying grounded in what God actually meant.

This reminds us: knowing a few verses doesn’t mean we know the truth. We need the full message, not just the parts that are easy to quote.

Word Study:

“Distort” (Greek: strebloō)

This word means to twist or bend something forcefully. It paints a picture of taking something straight and trustworthy, then pulling it out of shape until it no longer reflects what it really was. When people twist Scripture, it no longer leads to freedom or truth—it becomes a tool of confusion.

Reflect:

Have I ever changed the meaning of a verse—maybe without realizing it—just to make it sound more useful or reassuring?

Journaling Prompt:

Prayer:

Father, I don’t want to misuse Your Word. Teach me to approach the Bible with a tender and teachable heart. Where I’ve misunderstood or misrepresented truth, gently correct me. Give me wisdom and insight. Help me to love truth—not just words that sound good, but the truth that sets me free and draws me closer to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge:

Take one verse you hear often (or love to quote). Open your Bible and read the full chapter it comes from.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the bigger picture.

Write down anything that surprises or challenges you.
