Kōwhai Specialist School
https://www.kowhaispecial.school.nz/
Tips for connecting with a school (specialist or mainstream)
Go to the school (all staff meetings, tour school)
Ongoing relationship building and making sure the schools knows the space is available to them (Sending regular updates to school, meeting regularly with school staff, keep in regular contact, inform schools of upcoming shows and opportunities)
Adopt a collaborative approach and work closely with teachers if you are creating a bespoke experience (particularly if working with disabled audiences is new for you)
Tips for working with students with disabilities
Ensure there is flexibility for diff audiences/needs (Offer of early openings to kowhai, taking smaller numbers)
Meet the kids on their turf (the school) first
Engagement looks different in students with different needs
Behaviour is communication
Provide clear directions and expectations (schedules, scripts, individual resources)
If possible, visit a local specialist school and have a tour of the space
Let them know the options they have for a visit
Be clear in your communication about any potential stressors in your environment
Be prepared to think outside of the box and work with teachers to find the best way to engage and work with these students
Give students plenty of preparation – as much as possible. Indicate clearly what students can expect from each session, and include imagery of your space

Tips from the Sector for applying these pedagogies
"I used an addon to google slides/Microsoft teams called Pear Deck which makes a slide show interactive for the students in that they can get to comment and write thoughts, answer questions and see the responses anonymously, but I can send the full class work back to the teacher. If it's a google classroom and the tamariki have logged in, it will give the work of the tamariki to the teacher to follow up with. It's pretty cool stuff. "
"I also encourage the use of 'I think, I see, I wonder' alongside some photos or short video clips sent to schools before a visit. I wonder then becomes the questions students have that we can address during a visit. This can be done via a collaborative online tool like padlet."
"I've used this as well to support schools when their visit has been cancelled due to covid or weather and so I could answer their questions using links, photos, videos etc. on padlet or a google application and interact with them even though they were at school instead of being able to visit."
"I've used padlet in the past to get student ideas and thoughts and encouraged the teacher to participate with it as well. I used an image of a object that the tamariki were going to encounter in the programme and was able to use some of the ideas from the tamariki to explore in more depth."
"I did [play-based learning] once with a Yr 7/8 group of students with learning and behavioural issues and we built a map of our local environment. We used lego, boxes, models the students had made, and then we looked at how our town had developed, and what they thought could be included in future development. Took a lot of space but it was a unit that took in all subject areas."
"When we ran our digital programme, we encouraged students to play with the apps and programmes with limited guidance - so that they could find out what they could do with that tool. It was amazing to see what functions they discovered, and how they taught each other."
Tips from the Sector for Pre-visit connection and communication
"I have used google meet as a pre-visit outreach tool which has worked well especially for senior secondary so that some background introductory materials can be looked at before the visit that is likely then focused on the NCEA assessment criteria. "
"We're just setting up shared Google Docs for our lesson plans. We could include a space for teachers to add these?"
"Yes... when the students know why they are doing something and how it will be used later, that makes a huge difference. The support from the classroom teacher is so important too."
"Boxes that go out to schools - handling objects as loan items."
That's my question... how do we describe [that we're open to flexible sessions or bespoke programmes] on our websites?
"Encourage teachers to call in/phone"
"Yes, that's exactly what I am working on right now as we are updating the website: It will say the programmes are bespoke, and at the same time we are also giving some topic suggestions so teachers have something to start from."
"Our online booking form allows kaiako to give us their learning needs/focus, where they are in learning, what they hope to gain from visiting. After we get the booking form, we have further conversations with them pre-visit to refine the programme to fit their needs."
"We offer a 'famil'- a short tour of the [Our Place] and a kōrero about how we can support the ako of the tamariki and kaiako. Also whatever other sort of communication that works, email, phone calls or zoom."
