How to Implement

Set up stations around the room, allow the girls 30 minutes at each station. Girls will work in teams of three or four switching roles throughout. The instructions for each station can be found in the For the Girls page. Encourage girls to share their projects in Flipgrid.

Station One: Water Rescue

• Fill one of the kiddie pools with about 6-8 inches of water.
• Set up a small container of objects that can float (examples: milk caps, metal frozen juice caps, foam craft pieces, bath toys, etc.). The girls to choose an object to rescue.
• Place/throw floating object into starting position in the water. (Alternatively, have a tub of objects they can rescue).
• On your mark, get set, go! Have the girls drive Sphero out into the water to capture and rescue the floating object. Sphero must bring the object back to place it started. Make sure the girls time the rescue. If they have an extra set of hands, video record the rescue!
• Optional: Suggest the girls construct watercraft for Sphero to carry/drag for the rescue.
• Have the girls respond to the following in their design journal: What worked? What didn't work? What could you do differently next time to improve the rescue mission and speed?
• Have girls try it again, switching roles! Can they beat their original time?

Station Two: Sphero Bowling

• Set up bowling pins about 10 feet (or how ever far you would like) away. Mark an X on the floor with masking tape for Sphero's starting position and for each of the bowling pins.
• Have the girls use the driving app to knock down the pins at the end of the alley.
• Each player takes 2 turns to knock down their pins.
• Reset and the next player bowls. Keep score and see who is the better driver.

Station Three: Sphero Paint

• Set up kiddie pool.
• Set up a bucket of soapy water and bucket of rinse water.
• Set out different covers possibilities (nubby cover, clear plastic wrap, craft paper and tape).
• Place a sheet of paper in the kiddie pool.
• Squeeze gobs of paint in different areas of the pool for Sphero to roll through and then roll over the paper.
• They can paint without a cover on Sphero but they should wash the paint off before it has a chance to dry and before they switch to a different cover.
• Have the girls rotate so they each get a chance to paint.
• Encourage a “less is more” approach to the composition. Filling the page can end up looking like a muddy mess, rather than something they like.
• Encourage the girls to experiment with trying different covers on Sphero.
