How to Implement

• Have girls work in groups of three or four. They will be working in these same groups in the following activities.
• Explain to the girls that they will draw a creature through a collaborative design process called the Drawing Game. Each person in the group will have a chance to contribute to the each other’s design. There is a catch: they won’t be able to see what others have drawn until the last person is finished--and they can’t talk during the process!
• Pass out materials.
• Have each girl take her piece of paper and fold it evenly into three or four sections, depending on how many girls are in their group. The paper should be oriented portrait-style with the fold lines running across the page. At the end of the activity they will have completed three or four drawings.
• Have them arrange themselves so that they can’t see what others are drawing.
• The first round will begin with Section 1 (sections explained below). Give girls two to three minutes for each round--this is meant to be a quick exercise. Make sure they fold their paper after drawing so that the next person can’t see their design.
• They are free to draw whatever type of creature they want: a person, animal, alien, etc. They can also include whatever features and accessories they would like.
• Then have them draw in each section as follows:
  • 3-Person Group
    • Section 1: Head to base of neck/start of shoulders
    • Section 2: Base of neck/start of shoulders to start of legs
    • Section 3: Start of legs to feet
  • 4-Person Group
    • Section 1: Head to base of neck/start of shoulders
    • Section 2: Base of neck/start of shoulders to waist
    • Section 3: Waist to knees
    • Section 4: Knees to feet
• Have them unfold the drawings to see what kinds of creatures they made. Next each group will decide on one design to use as inspiration to create their first robot in the following activity.
