How to Implement

• Girls will work in teams of 3 or 4. Have them note in their design journals their team members, the title of the activity, and the ID of the tablet and/or laptop they are using. They will return to these teams as they build upon this app in future activities.
• Introduce the challenge: Make an app that simulates finger painting (dipping your fingers in a pot of paint and drawing on a canvas). Ask if anyone has used a drawing/coloring app before and connect what the girls will be coding to that experience.
• If you have created a version of this app beforehand, you can demo it and ask the girls to list the different events the app will be responding too.
• To begin, have the girls go to Thunkable and sign in with their team’s device ID. Next they should create a new app, naming it with this convention:

TeamNamePaintPotOne_V1

• The girls will do a “Save As” for each tutorial for this app, so that they will have at least six different Paint Pot files, one for each completed stage.
• If the girls need help but want to keep working on their program, encourage them to save a version of the file before altering the code (especially if what they have was working). They can do this by adding _V# (with # being the number of the version they are working on). Files that are no longer being used can be deleted later.
• Have the girls follow along with the Paint Pot 1 document.

  • Do you notice any limitations? Did you notice that all of the paint dots have the same radius -- 5 pixels? We'll address this the next time we work on the app after we have talked about variables.
