Misinformation on the Internet

Information that is posted to the internet is created by many different users. Although this information is freely available, it does not mean that it is always reliable. Some internet authors will post incorrect information on the internet. It is our job to determine whether or not information found on the internet is accurate.

Misinformation Defined

Disinformation

Information that was intentionally created by an author to manipulate their audience. Disinformation will often discredit reliable information or support false conclusions. To be believable authors will often mix the truth with lies to persuade their audience.

Misinformation

False or inaccurate information that is spread unintentionally. Misinformation is not intended to mislead people whereas disinformation is. Misinformation can be caused by misinterpretation of correct information.

Propaganda

Information used to promote a specific cause. Propaganda authors use information to influence readers to support the authors viewpoint.

How to Evaluate Information

The first thing I do when evaluating information online is to check the websites domain name. Here is a graphic to help you identify reliable websites.

The most reliable websites have domain names that end in .gov or .edu.
