Cooperative learning coaching is another support provided to teachers in the Topeka Public Schools. A number of classroom teachers, instructional coaches, counselors, district certified support staff, and administrators have been specially trained by Kagan Professional Development in the Kagan Coaching Model.
Just as instructional coaches provide ongoing support to teachers, Cooperative Learning coaches also provide ongoing support as teachers implement engagement strategies. These coaches also provide effective feedback, both during and after a coaching session. Cooperative Learning coaches and instructional coaches watch instructional strategy implementation, while simultaneously observing for student social skills and effective classroom management. Cooperative Learning coaches and instructional coaches spend time training teachers on the implementation of effective strategies to increase student achievement.
Cooperative Learning coaching most often happens "in the moment". While students are engaged in a strategy with their peers, the Cooperative Learning coach will have a brief conversation with the teacher about changing something to either fix the students' error, impact classroom management, or to increase the depth of engagement or learning. Cooperative Learning coaches use forms from Kagan Professional Learning to ensure teachers and student implement these engagement strategies the way they are intended, so the principles of cooperative learning (PIES) are not compromised.
YouTube Video: Time lapsed creation of a Mind Map focused on the concept of Growth Mindset
Mind maps are powerful tools in a teacher's toolbox. Students can take notes about a topic using a combination of words, phrases, color, symbols and pictures, and connections. They follow their teacher's example throughout instruction, or create their own during or after instruction. This very visual representation can then be used with several Kagan structures - like Overlap Map! Check out the video to observe the creation of a Mind Map that was used in a staff development about Growth Mindset.
