Studies show students retain much more from a lesson through academic discussion, hands-on practice, and teaching others. This research backs up the concept of bilingual partner work so long as the teacher remains in a facilitator role and the source of answers comes from the bilingual partner, table group, and class of students.
Each week in Math/Science/SocialStudies/Specials, the teacher has multiple opportunities for Bilingual Pair Activities. (See Bilingual Partners)
The activities are to be collected and held in this basket. Some assignments will be posted as recent bilingual partner work, and others will be sorted and sent home with partners. Students can decide who takes home work through a system of the teacher's choice (ie. Rock-Paper-Scissors).
Remember that there will be two verbs in the daily objective as the students will be completing two activities each day. One activity at the comprehension level, one activity at the application or higher level. See Building Objectives.
In one 90 minute day, the teacher will complete the following:
Focus (1-2 Minutes)
Direct Instruction (15-20 Minutes)
Bilingual Pair Activity 1 Comprehension (15-20 Minutes)
Bilingual Pair Activity 2 Application + (15-20 Minutes)
Closure (5-7 Minutes)
Conceptual Refinement (15-20 Minutes) in tandem with Journal Reflection (15-20 minutes)
