There are 3 types of lesson plan cycles in Secondary - the traditional cycles are for Language Arts or Science/Social Studies/Math/Specials. The third cycle includes the implementation of a BRC (Bilingual Research Center).
Due to time constraints in Secondary, there are times when a lesson plan cycle may take two days to complete.
The BRC lesson plan cycle will last through the duration of the project (days-weeks, teacher discretion).
Traditional
Teachers stick to the lesson plan cycle and use a timer to stay on pace.
Teachers follow the order of the lesson plan cycle and have enough time for conceptual refinement.
Teachers plan and execute bilingual pair activities.
Using two verbs (comprehension and higher) for your learning objectives.
The Bilingual Pair activities should align to each verb, respectively.
BRC
Teachers stick to the lesson plan cycle and use a timer to stay on pace.
The teacher is a facilitator throughout the lesson.
Students are working in groups of 4+ with clear roles.
Students are completing research bilingually, and creating a final project in the target language.
The teacher has provided a rubric.
The teacher uses daily objectives with two verbs posted on the content wall. (See 'Building Objectives')
SOL recommends a lesson plan cycle that is the opposite of what is often seen in a traditional classroom. Best practices infer that students should not be using traditional worksheets, activities should be majorly student-led, the teacher is the facilitator and not glued to a resource.
