"SB29" is an act that includes requirements regarding the collection, use, and protection of educational records by technology providers. The act covers two primary items: Contracts with Technology Providers and Restrictions on Access and Monitoring of student devices and accounts.
FERPA, or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, is a federal law that protects the privacy of students' educational records. It applies to all schools that receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education.
• Gives parents and eligible students (at least least 18 years old) the right to inspect and request corrections to their records
• Requires schools to get consent before sharing certain student information with others
• Allows schools to disclose directory information, such as a student's name and enrollment dates, without prior consent, but only after providing notice and giving parents a chance to opt out.
