This year Canada celebrates Black History Month under the theme: “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” This theme marks 30 years of Black History Month in Canada and honours the lasting contributions of Black Canadians. Their leadership, creativity, innovation, and resilience have helped shape our history, continue to impact our communities today, and will guide and inspire generations to come.
This theme strongly aligns with the vision of the Office of Black Flourishing at TMU School of Medicine (SoM). As part of this year’s observance, SoM is proud to highlight a Canadian changemaker whose advocacy made Black History Month in Canada possible - the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine.
The Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine is an educator, social justice advocate, and trailblazer for her parliamentary leadership roles. In 1993, Dr. Augustine made history as the first Black (African Canadian) woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons and appointed to Cabinet. Among Dr. Augustine’s many achievements and honours are her leadership in the 1995 motion that recognized February as Black History Month in Canada, and her successful 1997 motion that led to the placement of the Famous Five statue on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Throughout her career, Dr. Augustine has championed equity in education (with a particular focus on addressing the systemic barriers and racial inequalities in the Canadian education system to improve educational outcomes for Black students), community well-being, and culturally informed approaches to health - values that deeply align with TMU’s mission to build a more inclusive and socially responsive medical school.
All Faculty are invited to join us for a special Black History Month Health Systems Science (HSS) session, part of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) core curriculum, honouring Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine and her lasting impact on Black Canadians. This session will explore teamwork, leadership, and collaboration in health systems, featuring remarks from Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine and Ms. Lori Brady, Vice President, Community Integration, Partnerships, and Outpatient Care at Sunnybrook Health Sciences.
The event includes a Meet & Greet at 12:00 pm, followed by the session at 1:00 pm, and offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on equity, advocacy, and collaborative leadership in medical education and healthcare practice. Please register via this link.
