In May, we will be launching the National AccessAbility Week (May 25th - 29th) at the TMU School of Medicine!
Each year, this week offers a powerful opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Canadians with disabilities and commit to advancing accessibility and inclusion across our communities. In a medical education context, it also offers us a timely opportunity to reflect on how accessibility shapes both learning environments and patient care.This year, we’re marking the occasion with a series of engaging events.
Monday Matters Webinar Series: Disability from the Clinical Faculty Lens as Teacher, Provider, and Patient (Virtual)

This conversation will explore disability through the perspectives of clinical faculty - as teachers, healthcare providers, and patients. Led by Dr. Pamela Liao, Dr. Smita Halder, and Jennifer Alefounder, the session will reflect on how disability shapes experiences in clinical education and care. Participants will be invited to consider how these perspectives can inform more inclusive teaching practices, patient care, and learning environments.
Launch of Student-Run Ability Collective Group: Lunch and Learn Panel

This session will explore disability across medical education and healthcare through the perspectives of clinical faculty, administrators, and individuals with lived experience. Featuring speakers including Dr. Pamela Liao, (TMU Disability Health Lead & Special Advisor to the Dean, Jasdeep Chahal (Accommodations Facilitator), and Alexcia Reid (Learner Affairs Unit), the discussion will examine how disability shapes experiences in patient care, clinical training, and institutional approaches to accessibility, with the goal of fostering more inclusive learning environments and equitable care practices. Lunch will be provided for attendees.
The Overlooked Expertise: The Value of Lived Experience in Healthcare - A Conversation with Marlon Moore Jr (Virtual)

Disability advocate and entrepreneur in adaptive fashion Marlon Moore Jr. will share reflections from his experience living with spina bifida and his broader work in disability advocacy. He is the founder of The Con$cious Kid Brand, a clothing brand focused on changing the narrative of disability, and is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Secondary Special Education and Transition at the University of Kansas. In this session, he explores the idea that patients with disabilities carry a form of expertise that cannot be taught, inviting participants to consider how healthcare providers can better recognize and integrate the knowledge patients already hold about their own lives to support more collaborative and responsive care.
