How do I apply for scholarships?
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS→ scholarships won't award money if you complete the application incorrectly
Check your eligibility (do you meet the residency, age, grade, financial need, community service, or GPA requirements?)
Collect the materials you need AHEAD OF TIME (letters of recommendation, essays, resume, FAFSA)
If you have an essay or resume for your application, you should have someone proofread it before you submit!!
How do I request letters of recommendation?
If you need to request additional letters of recommendation, please email your teacher/counselor (and cc Mr. Saba) at least 4 WEEKS BEFORE the deadline! Please include the following in your email request:
The purpose of the rec letter (scholarship) and a hyperlink/pdf to the application/instructions if available
The deadline for the rec letter (sometimes later than the student deadline)
Share with them your Brag Sheet from earlier this year
Share with them your resume if you have one
When should I start my application?
You should give yourself at least 4 weeks to complete an application BEFORE the listed deadline (This is so you can make sure you have all of the materials you need and can get help from your teachers and counselors)
How do I find out my class rank?
TMA does not do class ranks. However, some scholarships require it as part of their applications.
If the scholarship application allows you to put “n/a” for “not applicable” or write "My school, Thurgood Marshall Academy, does not do class ranks," then do that
If that does not work, please see a counselor.
Should I thank my recommenders?
YES!
Some ways to thank your recommenders include:
a hand-written note or card
homemade baked goods
paraphernalia from the college of your choice (hat, mug, etc.)
a gift card
Where can I get my transcript?
Email Mr. Saba (hsaba@tmapchs.org) to request transcripts for scholarship applications (for college applications, request your transcript via MaiaLearn)
