Manufacturing

Do you have a passion for welding and manufacturing? Would you like to learn more about careers such as Foundry Worker, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers, Millwright, Tool and Die Maker, Welder and more? The Manufacturing SHSM program is for you! 

Required Courses

In the Manufacturing SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit. 

You will also need need three other credits. For the apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other three credits include: one in English, two in Mathematics (one credit must be in Grade 12) and one in Science or an additional Cooperative Education credit (in addition to the 2 required) 

For the workplace pathway, the other three credits include: two in English (one credit must be in Grade 12) and one in Mathematics.

And finally, you will need 2 Cooperative Education credits in a Manufacturing related field.

Certifications and Training

In addition to the required courses, you will complete six sector specific certifications and training.  Three of these certifications are compulsory and include First Aid, CPR and WHMIS. The other three certifications will be organized by Mr. Palmer and can include Working At Heights, Hoisting & Rigging, Confined Space Awareness. You will also have the opportunity to do a SMAW Flat Weld Test that gives you a Weld Ticket from the Canadian Welding Bureau. 

Experential Learning

In addition to your Major Credits and Certifications, you will also gain experience through your Cooperative Education course and other Reach Ahead and Experience Learning activities like coaching on Pipe and TIG Welding, the Provincial Skills Canada Competition and Trade Show, a trip to Georgian College in Barrie and Midland and more.  For more information about the Manufacturing SHSM program requirements you can check out the Ministry of Education website.
