Health and Wellness

Do you have a passion for health, fitness and helping others? Would you like to learn more about careers such as Chiropractor, Dentist, Early Childhood Educator, Massage Therapist, Nurse, Pharmacist, Phsysician, Physiotherapist and more? The Health & Wellness SHSM program is for you! 

Required Courses

In the Health & Wellness SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit. 

You will also need need three other credits. For the workplace, apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other four credits include: one in English, one in Mathematics and one in Science or Social Studies and Humanities. 

And finally, you will need 2 Cooperative Education credits in a Health & Wellness related field.

Certifications and Training

In addition to the required courses, you will complete seven sector specific certifications and training.  Four of these certifications are compulsory and include First Aid, CPR, Infection Control and WHMIS. The other three certifications will be organized by Ms Hutson. They can include options like Taping for athletic injuries, SafeTalk, Medical Terminology, Leadership, Group Dynamics, Communication Skills, NCCP coaching certifications, Making Headway Concussion Awareness and more!


Experential Learning

In addition to your Major Credits and Certifications, you will also gain experience through your Cooperative Education course and other Reach Ahead and Experience Learning activities like TreeTop Trekking, U of Waterloo Kinesiology Lab Days, Nipissing U anatomy and biomechanics labs, MLSE presentation and career exploration, Paramedic presentation, Massage therapy, chiropractic and acupuncture presentations and demonstrations.
