It serves as an umbrella term for sexual orientations and gender identities that differ from cisgender/heterosexual norms, with the "+" representing additional identities.
Each letter represents an individual’s identity, the group itself varied in its identity.
L (Lesbian): Women attracted to other women.
G (Gay): Men attracted to men, or a general term for same-gender attraction.
B (Bisexual): Attraction to more than one gender.
T (Transgender): Gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth
Q (Queer/Questioning): Queer is an umbrella term for non-straight/non-cisgender identities, while Questioning refers to exploring one’s identity.
I (Intersex): Variations in sex characteristics (reproductive organs, chromosomes) that do not fit typical binary definitions of male or female.
A (Asexual/Aromantic/Agender): Asexual people feel little to no sexual attraction; Aromantic people feel little to no romantic attraction; Agender people do not identify with any gender.
