Year 1

Summer  2

Read, Write Inc

The children continue to work with increased confidence in their RWI groups and have made some amazing progress. The learning of new phonic sounds each week will continue to support the children when applying this to their reading and writing.  Opportunities for proofreading and short writing tasks will also be completed weekly.  Please continue to listen to your child read as often as you can.

English and Guided reading

This term, Year 1 will continue to have additional English and guided reading lessons where they will look at books together to develop their own writing skills.

Maths

The last half term of year 1 maths focuses on fractions. Children will learn to identify half and quarters, through their understanding of equal and unequal groups. We will also explore place value further by looking at the numbers 1- 100.

Science

This half term in science we will be practicing working scientifically through weather-based experiments. The children will learn to observe closely, ask inquisitive questions, and gather and record data. We will also be recapping our animal knowledge before visiting Hogshaw Farm.

Computing

In Computing, we will continue to develop our keyboard skills and mouse control. The children will use 2Create a Story to produce a simple story, adding images, sounds and animation to the text.

History

In History, we will be finding out about toys in the past. The children will start by describing their favourite toy. Then we will sort and compare old and new toys. They will also find out about the toys played with by their parents and grandparents. If possible, please spend some time talking to your child about your favourite toy too.

Dear Families,

In Summer 2 our new topic will be Toys. This theme will run throughout the lessons to help the children make connections across subjects.

Year 1 Team

RE

We will continue to learn more about the Islamic faith. We will learn about the Five Pillars of Islam and the importance of prayer to Muslims. Finally, we will look at prayer beads and the children will explore objects that are precious to them and explain why.
