This week a large, enthusiastic group of 5th graders started working as Jr. Librarians. They are getting orientated, learning how to shelve books, and helping wrap books for our upcoming blind date with a book promotion!

Leo's Choice Award 2026
A beloved tradition enjoyed by the TSC community, the Leo's Choice Award is TSC's own annual picture book award. Students in grades 5-6 helo our librarian choose 5 of the best picture books of the year. K-4 students read, analyze, and discuss the merits of those Leo's Choice finalists. Soon they will cast their votes! K-4 students will also be voting on candidates for the Leo Lee award, TSC's award for best Spanish language book.
Fantasy? Realistic Fiction? Mystery? Historical Fiction?

The TSC 4th graders are in the thick of a realistic fiction genre exploration and this week both 4th and 5th graders spent time in the library sorting fiction books according to genre, using different strategies for evaluating the genre before committing to a book, such as checking a blurb, reading an excerpt, and noticing clues in the cover art. Students also discussed how to define different fiction genres, and the many fuzzy areas where genres can overlap. We all agreed on one thing: What matters most is that it's a good book!
