In Autumn 2 the children used charcoal to mark make shapes and lines. We spoke about the different textures that can be explored based on how the charcoal is used and how to make it darker/ lighter.
In the Autumn term, Year 1 were using charcoal to create a picture of different house types in the United Kingdom. They began by drawing 2D shapes using charcoal and then focused on different patterns such as waves and lines to add detail to their house. The children enjoyed shading using charcoal to create their different patterns.
In Year 2, We used different shades and forms to sketch shapes and patterns.
In Year 3, we learnt to use charcoal for the first time. We tried the different thicknesses to see which ones we enjoyed using most. Then, we learnt the skills of hatching and cross hatching and applied it to making a bird. We used the concepts of line, shape, value form and space. We also learnt to shade and observed where the light was coming from in order to form shadows.
This year, in Year 4 we learnt to sketch and shade the rainforest leaves using charcoal . The children especially enjoyed creating different textures and shades.
In Year 5, we used charcoal to create images of their reading text 'The London Eye Mystery'.. We especially enjoyed creating different lines, forms, textures and shades.
In Year 6, we applied the techniques of shading and sketching in charcoal to our topic in Geography which was based on mountains.
